Die kalifornische Formation wird am 3. Februar gemeinsam mit den Rappern Travis Scott und Big Boi (Outkast) in Atlanta in der Halbzeit von Super Bowl LIII auftreten. Maroon 5 erlebten 2004 ihren Durchbruch und haben bisher weltweit um die 53 Millionen Alben verkauft. Die aus Los Angeles stammenden Poprocker waren aber offenbar nicht erste Wahl der NFL.
Laut Medienberichten haben Rapperin Cardi B und davor bereits Rihanna im Oktober ein Angebot der NFL abgelehnt, weil sie den früheren NFL-Quarterback Colin Kaepernick bei seinem Protest unterstützen. 2016 weigerte sich Kaepernick bei der Nationalhymne zu stehen und ging, als Zeichen gegen Polizeigewalt gegen Afroamerikaner, aufs Knie. Trotz der Unterstützung vieler Prominenter hat er seit der Aktion keinen Vertrag mehr mit einem NFL Team bekommen. Seit einiger Zeit läuft eine Petition, die Maroon 5 auffordert ebenfalls nicht aufzutreten.

Halftime Shows seit den 60er Jahren
Anfangs bestritten die Halftime Shows traditionelle Marching Bands, erst ab den 90er Jahren traten immer öfter bekannte Größen des Showgeschäfts auf. New Kids On The Block, Gloria Estefan und Michael Jackson zogen immense Aufmerksamkeit auf die Show. Seither folgten weitere große Namen: Lady Gaga, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, die Rolling Stones, U2 u.v.a.
