For die hard football fans National Signing Day has become somewhat of a holiday. It’s a day to hold parties to celebrate a favorite team’s accomplishments and to toast an encouraging future. For high school seniors it is the day when, after months (sometime years) of being recruited by coaches, they end everyone’s speculations and officially announce where they will be playing football. Players may have previously announced which university they aim to attend, but these early verbal commitments are not binding. Due to the magnitude of the moment it has become a day for the nation’s top recruits to be treated like celebrities and have a moment of fame behind a microphone.
To celebrate the occasion many schools hold parties to introduce their collection of promising and talented recruits (and to raise money). This year the University of Oregon has invited boosters to a $50 a plate luncheon where head coach Chip Kelly will hold a press conference. Boosters will be introduced to, and be able to mingle with, this year’s signees and get an exclusive viewing of an Oregon recruiting highlight film.

For the UofO this year’s signing class looks to be outstanding. Only days ago Lache Seastrunk, the nation’s fourth-best running back prospect, verbally committed to Oregon. His commitment, added to other talented recruits, has led Rivals.com to rank Oregon 13th nationally for the 2010 recruiting class. For Oregon Duck Fans, February 3rd is looking like a day to exult our good fortune.
